"Tunneling" is when a candle burns down the middle of the container leaving lots of wax stuck to the side. Many candles tunnel due to incorrect wick size or type. All Candle Shack soy wax candles are thoroughly tested and correctly wicked in order to burn to the edge of the container.
If your Candle Shack soy wax candle is burning down the middle (as shown in the image - left) you should try to keep your candle lit for longer before you extinguish it. Soy wax has a memory and should be allowed to achieve a full melt pool on it's very first burn. This can take 2-3 hours to achieve. If it is extinguished prior to allowing a full melt pool, subsequent melt pools are unlikely to go past the first one.
Trimming the wick to 5mm prior to each burn will also ensure that your candle burns slowly and evenly. Candles also perform better when burnt in a draft-free room.
Yes, you really should trim the wick to 5mm every time you light your soy wax candle. If you don't, problems can occur. Here's why:
Soy candles do not produce the toxic soot that paraffin candles do, but when not properly trimmed, the wicks of all candles can "mushroom" at the top, causing excessive flickering and/or smoke. Keeping your wick trimmed keeps this to a minimum and also makes your candle safer.
Trimming also prevents your wick from curling back into the wax - a common problem with non-metal cored wicks. Because our wicks contain no lead, zinc, or metal of any kind, they are very easily trimmed by just breaking off the top of the wick (the curled part) before lighting.
Frosting is a natural characteristic of vegetable wax and is not a flaw. It is unique to natural wax candles and is often called "bloom". Indeed, many customers are concerned if there is no frosting on their soy candles. It is a way that a customer can tell if their candle is really made with pure, all-natural soy wax. It's part of the soy experience!
Frosting does not affect the scent throw or the burning properties of the candle. Frosting is a particular crystal growth of vegetable oils. It will cause the candle to look dry, which is simply a characteristic of the crystal structure, but has nothing to do with the candle "drying out". To minimize frosting, try to keep your candle out of direct sunlight and florescent lighting. Even changes in the weather can cause additional frosting. It is almost impossible to stop the soy wax from blooming.
